Vincent van Gogh painted Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear in January 1889, shortly after cutting off the lower part of his left ear during a mental health crisis in Arles. He had been living in the Yellow House with Paul Gauguin; the two artists quarrelled violently. Van Gogh painted this self-portrait while still recovering, wearing a fur hat and coat against the winter cold. Behind him hangs a Japanese print — he owned hundreds. The painting is at the Courtauld Gallery in London.
