Rachel Ruysch painted flower still-lifes in Amsterdam and The Hague between 1680 and 1750 — an extraordinary career spanning seven decades. She was the most highly paid Dutch still-life painter of her era and one of the few women in European art to achieve that status in her own lifetime. Her arrangements are botanically impossible: flowers from different seasons in the same vase. The compositions were deliberate fictions — the point was not reality but perfection. Her paintings are at the Mauritshuis in The Hague and the Rijksmuseum.
