The Ukrainian Tryzub (Тризуб, "Trident") is the national symbol of Ukraine, appearing on the coat of arms since 1918 and again since independence in 1991. Its origin is debated: it appears on coins of Volodymyr the Great (c. 980–1015 CE), who Christianised Kievan Rus. Some scholars see a stylised bird (falcon); others see a combination of letters. It survived Soviet suppression and became one of the most politically charged symbols in Eastern Europe after 2014. A symbol of sovereignty, identity, and resistance.
