Paul Gauguin painted Two Tahitian Women in 1899, during his second stay in Tahiti. He had by then abandoned France permanently and was trying to paint outside the European pictorial tradition — though his subjects remained influenced by it. The two women are holding flowers and a tray of fruit: a symbolic offering, or simply two people resting. The painting is at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
