Jean-Léon Gérôme painted Pollice Verso in 1872. The title is Latin for "thumbs turned" — the signal to kill a defeated gladiator. A Vestal Virgin in the upper left leads the crowd's gesture. Gérôme was a leading Orientalist and academic painter, and his gladiatorial paintings were enormously popular in the late 19th century. Photographs of this painting — not the original — were what inspired Ridley Scott's visual approach to Gladiator (2000). The original is at the Phoenix Art Museum in Arizona.
