Jan van Eyck painted The Arnolfini Portrait in 1434 in Bruges. It depicts Giovanni di Nicolao Arnolfini, an Italian merchant, and his wife — and contains one of the first known self-portraits in Northern European painting: van Eyck's own reflection in the convex mirror on the back wall, above the inscription Johannes de Eyck fuit hic (Jan van Eyck was here). The painting was groundbreaking for its use of oil paint to capture light on metal, fur, and glass. It is at the National Gallery in London.
