Ilya Repin painted Barge Haulers on the Volga between 1870 and 1873. Eleven men haul a steam barge upstream on the Volga River — bound together by a rope, half-bent under the weight, faces showing exhaustion and resignation. Repin was 26 when he began the painting after seeing haulers on the Neva River in St. Petersburg. The work caused a sensation in Russia for depicting ordinary labourers with the scale and seriousness reserved for historical scenes. Tsar Alexander III purchased it. It is at the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg.
