Alexandre Cabanel painted The Fallen Angel in 1847, when he was 24. The subject is Lucifer at the moment of his fall from heaven — not the triumphant rebel of Milton, but a figure consumed by grief and rage, tears streaming down his face as he gazes upward at the light he has lost. Cabanel won the Prix de Rome the same year. The painting is at the Musee Fabre in Montpellier, France. A later, larger version from 1868 is at the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp.
