Vincent van Gogh painted The Starry Night in June 1889 from the window of his room at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Remy-de-Provence. He had admitted himself voluntarily. In the painting, the village below is calm; the sky is in violent motion — swirling brushstrokes turning stars and moon into dynamic forms. Van Gogh himself was ambivalent about the painting. It is now at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, where it has been since 1941.
