Mondrian Broadway Boogie Woogie Skateboard Art
Piet Mondrian painted Broadway Boogie Woogie in 1942-1943, shortly after arriving in New York as a refugee from Nazi-occupied Europe. He was 68 years old. The city overwhelmed him -- the grid of streets, the taxi cabs, the jazz and boogie-woogie music he heard in the clubs. He translated it into paint: a yellow grid pulsing with small blocks of red and blue, movement contained in geometry. It was a radical departure from his earlier austere black-and-white grid paintings. The painting is at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.
