John Everett Millais painted Ophelia in 1851–1852. The model, Elizabeth Siddal, posed for months in a bathtub of water kept warm by oil lamps — she developed a serious illness afterward. Millais first spent four months painting every detail of the riverbank outdoors in Surrey before adding the figure. The painting now hangs at Tate Britain in London, where it remains one of the most visited works in the collection.
