Katsushika Hokusai published The Great Wave off Kanagawa around 1831 as part of his series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. It was printed in woodblock, not painted — a mass-produced image sold cheaply in Edo. The wave was the incidental subject; Fuji, barely visible between the crests, was the point. The image became well-known in Europe after being imported in bulk as packing paper, where it influenced Impressionist and Art Nouveau artists.
