El Greco painted Saint Sebastian around 1577–1578, shortly after his arrival in Toledo, Spain. Sebastian was a Roman soldier martyred for his Christian faith — tied to a post and shot with arrows. El Greco depicts him at the moment of suffering: bound, pierced, yet serene. The elongated figure, luminous skin against a dark sky, and expressive distortion are hallmarks of El Greco's mature style, influenced by his training in Venice under Titian. Several versions exist; the most prominent is at the Palacio de Monterrey in Salamanca.
