Edvard Munch made four versions of The Scream between 1893 and 1910 — two paintings and two pastels. In his diary, Munch described the experience: he was walking at sunset when "the sky turned as red as blood" and he felt "an infinite scream passing through nature." The figure is not screaming — it is recoiling from a scream it hears in the landscape. The most famous version, the 1893 tempera on cardboard, is at the National Museum of Norway in Oslo. In 2012, a pastel version sold at Sotheby's for $119.9 million.
