Arnold Bocklin painted Self-Portrait with Death Playing the Fiddle in 1872. A skeleton appears over Bocklin's shoulder, playing a violin into his ear while he listens and paints. It is both a memento mori in the medieval tradition and a self-aware joke: the artist working with death as his accompanist. Bocklin was a Swiss Symbolist painter working in Rome and Munich. The painting is at the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin.
